I Stole $40,000 From My Dying Mother

Published 9/6/2026

She had dementia. She did not know who I was. Her account had $40,000 sitting there for years. I transferred it to myself the week before she died. I told myself it was inheritance. I told myself she would have wanted me to have it. But she was still breathing. She was still alive. And I took it while she stared at the wall, not knowing her own name. I bought a car with it. I drive that car every day. Every time I start the engine, I hear her voice.
